Bible Baptist Church was started on July 12, 1959. Its first location was a modest house on north Duck Street. The church was started under the authority of the Bible Baptist Church in Enid by Pastor Alvin L. Turner and his wife along with 13 charter members. Shortly thereafter, the church grew sufficiently as to require a permanent location. The congregation began renting an old blacksmith shop on south Lowry which, needless to say, required much hard work and whitewashing to prepare for services. Finally, on July 13, 1965, the church was able to purchase two acres at its current location for $4,000 and in August they began construction. The finished product was what is now called the “Sumner Chapel” and tower area.
As the attendance grew, the church was forced once again to add space in the form of a new Sunday school wing, with additional space on the east and northeast sides. In the late 70’s Bible Baptist Church began her most aggressive building project in her history — the current sanctuary. It was finally completed and dedicated under the leadership of pastor Sam Davison in May of 1980.
In her 44 years of ministry, Bible Baptist Church has had only seven pastors including the current pastor, Wayne Hardy. While it has undergone many changes, by God's grace its unity has remained intact. In July of 1965, a proposal was introduced to change the name of Bible Baptist Church to Young Street Bible Baptist Church. The vote was 7-6 for keeping the original name. Because it was so close, the church agreed to re-vote the next month. The re-vote yielded a 5-5 tie. After this vote, a motion was a made to just keep the name the same. The vote: unanimous!
By the grace of God, Bible Baptist Church has had a wonderful past and with the help of God we'll have a bright future!
